Drunk on a Dark Texas Highway (600 words)

I once drove ninety-six miles of a dark Texas highway, drunk off my ass. My inebriated state didn’t lighten my foot, but I held an intense focus. I don't know if it was my training or the mindset my training gave me, but I was getting my ass home. I had to report for duty in three hours – shaved, clean, and with a perfect uniform. It was a day designated for blues.

My girlfriend laid next to me – passed out, laying still enough to cause me a little concern. But I had no time for that. “Focus, Airman…you got this.”

The night air was cold enough to keep me up while I chainsmoked and rapped along to my favorite Tupac songs. Outside was the darkest of dark. I saw no stars or moon, I couldn't see clouds. That highway didn't have lights – only at the sparse rest areas or exits. The long stretches were unsettling. Perhaps, I would have been more afraid if I wasn't drunk. Of course, if I wasn't drunk, there'd be no need to be afraid. I should have been. I was a drunk black kid driving 80 mph at 0300 with an unconscious, drunk white girl in my car. If I was caught, “Sir, I’m in the military, I'm trying to report, and this is my girlfriend” might have saved me. However, If I was lucky enough to be only arrested and ticketed, I'd be in danger of losing my credentials for my job.

“Oh my God, dude…sing and smoke…sing and smoke…your life actually depends on it.”

The drive went by aggressively slowly. My efforts went to avoiding sleep. The road bent where I didn’t remember it bending. My vision was blurry and shaky. I grasped my girlfriend’s hand to gain confidence, even if it wasn't actively given. I decided to smoke her cigarettes. They were awful so I assumed I would stay awake.

My girlfriend opened her eyes and began to rock from side to side for nearly a minute, then said “I have to pee” before laying down and returning to sleep. I could do nothing but focus on the road.

I pulled into the first gas station I saw, lights disturbingly bright. Patrons held and drank from brown bags. I expected as much at 0445 on a Monday. I woke her, “go pee.”

She opened her eyes and stared at me blankly.

“Babe, go pee.”

She slowly exited the car. I lit another cigarette in triumph, deeply breathing relief. She returned.

“How did you know I had to pee?” She asked.

“You shook and then told me.”

“I shook?”

“You fuckin’ shook.”

She fastened her seatbelt, rolled over and drifted off. She fell asleep so concretely, I had to carry her into my apartment. I worried how it looked, especially on my side of town. It was a diverse area with lots of break-ins and public fights. Years later, a different woman, my new wife, would witness a shooting and brutal beating in front of our house. But, I digress.

I finally got her into my apartment and laid her down. Without removing clothing, I laid next to her and slept for an hour before waking to my alarm. Time to report. My blues felt cold, but looked sharp after a good ironing. No time to shave before I left, so I grabbed my electric razor and shaved on my way.

At work, I stared at my computer screen in complete agony, trying not to fall asleep or throw up. And so went the day, until I could finally go home and rest.

It Calls (Poem)

I feel it calling my name.

The madness that follows the bouts of shame

and the sadness that follows anger's flame.

It tells me who I am from what I was,

watches me cry and try to forget its rage.

I try and cry to the Lord up above

to help me stand and kneel on my own to pray

to help me stay my hand, so that he may stay his.

All the while, my pleas feel as though they're in vain.

Its pain harshly feels like it was, will be, and is.

What do I say to it, when I feel it's embrace

hear it call out my moniker, threaten that for which I live?

I'll dream fantasies of goals met, fantasize heights found.

I'll cry to God with thanksgiving and shower the praise.

To the thing that calls me to rage, your bounds are not my bounds.

Fuck you. Fuck your Feelings. Fuck everything you say.

Slumber (Poem)

I watch you die in my slumber

The number of you that perished under

My own hand.  The demands were great

Moving like the sound of thunder surrounded by the hate For our foes.

In the throes of the conflict that drove my aches to be perfect.

My service on a level above reproach, but i failed you.  They assailed you and I could do

Nothing.  I did what was done and now i run from your memory.

But it finds me.

I hear your screams in the silence.

All the violence that took you in after the mileage of your journey.

The seemingly endless journey to your demise.

I see through your eyes

and I cry tears of self-hatred and despise me

despite my efforts to remain present.

The moments I live became disgusting in my brain,

Living in vain When you perished with my name under.

When I close my eyes, I watch you die in my slumber

Molten (poem)

Tears in the dark drip gracefully and silent

As if on tip toes to muffle their feet.

They betray my inner self and show the quiet

Yet loud pounds of the discreet agony that lay beneath My skin.

Within me beats a spirit, once ice and rock, now soft

And molten stone on broken land.

Inside me sits this being that weeps for the lost

Quieted unconsciously by my hand

I pray God, take this thorn from my side so I can be

Free again.

Hitman that talks too much (500 words)

A man sneaks around cars – it's a fancy parking lot with fancy vehicles. Sweat pours from his brow as he frantically searches the area for threats. He sees none. He quickens his pace. Quicker and quicker he makes his way through the lot, then begins to sprint to the nearest door.

The lights were flickering causing him to see blinking shadows as movement. He stops to point his weapon towards the darkness. “Just shadows.”  More running. Rain starts to fall. First a few trickles, then enough to expect an ark full of animals and a family of eight. He worries the sound of his steps will give him away, but reaches the door and swings it open.

A shot rings out. The man crumples to the ground, laying on the cement clutching his stomach. He groans and pulls his gun.  Another shot and his weapon flings from his hand.

“You shot at me, Mr. Baker,” says his assailant.

“I was just doing as I was ordered,” he gasps and groans.

“Do you know what it's like, Mr. Barker?”

“Baker.”

“What?” He asks.

“Baker. You just said it,” even through pain, he could be irritated.

“For fu…” he throws up his hands, “Okay, Mr. BAKER. Do you know what it's like?”

“Being shot at? Yes, you just shot m-”

“No!” He snaps, “being made fun of for having a large Adam's apple.”

“But, I…didn't…”

“Oh, I know. You stole from my employer,” he taps him on the head with his gun, “but there was a guy in high school.  Such an asshole. It was awful. I was destined to be a killer. Do you know what that's like?”

“I guess…I was a band ge-”

“BAND!?!? Those bastards were the worst.  Did unspeakable things to me.”

“Hey, man. If you let me live, I'll listen to all your pr-”

“Once…in band…a kid blew his trumpet spit on my shoulder,” he hangs his head, “it was terrible.  You have no idea the pain that made me who I am.”

“Dude, honestly, that doesn't sound so ba-”

“What the hell do you know about pain!?!?”

The victim rolled his eyes. “You fucking sho-”

“They called me ‘spit shoulder!’ ‘Spit shoulder big apple!!’ Do you know how that feels!?!?”

“Okay, honestly man, just kill-”

“And this girl – my first crush – she told my parents when I showed her porn.”

“Well, that one sucks.  What teenage boy doesn't look at po-”

“I was seven,” he wiped a tear away, “my whole second grade class called me ‘Porn King’ and didn't ever stop…for a few days.”

“That's…too ba-”

“You ever black out while eating and wake up with everyone dead?”

“WHAT THE F-”

“Well, I had a dream that happened…” he chuckles slightly, “I've had a disturbing life.”

“Man, gimme the gun. I'll kill mys-”

“Spit shoulder…” he whispers through gritted teeth, shaking his head, “big apple...”

“Dude, seriously, I'm ready to d-”

A gunshot rings out. “Hmm..,” says the killer to himself, “they always say that.”

Dad's story of the YinYang

A burly man sat alone by the fire in front of his log cabin in the mountains.  Condensation had frozen to his long beard and his long white hair hung low on the snow on which he sat.  He wore leather pants and jacket with a red flannel long-sleeved button-up underneath.  His black gloves held his tobacco pipe and lighter as he took a puff and let it go into the cool crisp air.  The night was cold but warmer than it had been in the last few days, so Dan was thankful to be outside in the weather.  While still thirty-five degrees, it was twenty degrees warmer than the day they arrived for their standard every other weekend trip.

“Dad?” Came a voice from behind.  A young man of eight years old came out to meet him.  He was wearing matching blue flannel pajama shirt and pants covering a thermal underwear and shirt.  He was wearing his father’s spare boots to walk in the snow and had wrapped himself in a fleece blanket.

“Hey, biscuit,” he removed his coat and laid on the ground next to him and extended an arm, motioning for his son to sit, “it’s late, son. What are you doing up?”

“You didn’t tell the story tonight.”

Dan smiled, “Well you were sleepin', boy.  I didn’t want to wake you.”

“I missed it,” Biscuit snuggled up to his father, “will you tell it?  You’re story of yin and yang?”

“Well, it’s not the same as the true story of the yin and yang but it’s a good one,” the father unrolled a thick, waterproofed sleeping back with a built in pillow that he covered with his rolled up coat.  The boy got in and laid his head on the makeshift pillow, “close your eyes and I’ll tell it.” Biscuit obeyed.  Dan began to stroke his hair, “A long, long time ago, at the dawn of time, there were two tribes.  What should those tribe names be tonight?”

“Can they be silly?”

“Sure,” he gave a chuckle.

“Um…How about the spunkies…and the dubies.”

Dan raised an eyebrow and looked down at his son who was giggling to himself.  He puffed on his pipe, “spunkies and dubies it is.” He ruffled Biscuit's hair.  “long ago, at the beginning of time, there were two tribes on earth. Both tribes worked for the good of the other, both sharing goods that they gathered or hunted during the day and night.  One tribe, the spunkies, was large, almost one hundred people.  Great warriors,  men of the tribe, came up from them and protected both tribes from predators during the day, while the other tribe was sleeping, by taking the form of a lion in the sun.  They were very needed because many larger and more dangerous animals prowled during the day.”

“What’s more dangerous than a lion, dad?”

“I don't know.  Perhaps they had different animals back then.  What could we call these animals?”

“oooo. How bout the destroyers?”  Biscuit liked foreboding names.

“You got it,” Dad said with a wink, “The destroyers roamed during the day and would attack the cattle and the people of the tribe if not kept in check by the lions.  The sun gave these lions strength above lions so they could vanquish threats by fighting together.  They were only awake during the day and the hunters of the village would hunt for food for both tribes all day.

The other tribe was called the Dubies and it had a little less people than the Spunkies, maybe about eighty people.  The Dubies slept all day and we’re only awake at night.  They could see in the dark, which helped them gather berries, leaves, firewood and wood for weapons.  Other things too.  They gathered for both tribes.  But the destroyers never slept so they also needed protectors.  So at night, in the light of the moon, great warrior women rose up to defend the tribes.  In the moonlight, they would change into large wolves given extra strength from the moons rays.” He rubbed his son’s hair from his eyes to see that they were only slightly open.

“Now,” he continued, “There was a celestial being, kind of a God, that was responsible for the rise and fall of the sun and the moon.  Every day, he would use much of his strength to move both into the places they needed to be.  As time went on, the flowers and trees grew and brought forth foliage.  Animals to hunt thrived and multiplied.  Now, this being….what should we call him?”

“Um…hank,” Biscuit said in a sleepy voice.

“Ok, then…Hank also had to make sure the animals and plants were taken care of, and control the wind and the rain which was hard for him to do when he had to adjust the sun and moon all day and all night.  Hank decided to pick one warrior from each tribe to take on this task.  A woman, named...” he looked down to see his son's eyes closed and he was breathing a little heavier,”…let’s call her Yin.  Yin was chosen from the Dubies to control the positon of the moon.  This was a very high honor and she was lauded by the tribes.

“Then, a man, Yang, a warrior from the Spunkies was chosen to control the sun.  Yin and Yang were the fiercest warriors of the tribe. However, they were also in love.  They had been seeing each other for years.  They had just told the tribes that they were getting married.  Their bond gave them the extra power to change to their animal form both day and night, allowing them to protect the tribe at all times – together.  Their relationship strengthened the tribes and they were completely opposite of each other.  Yin liked the cool of the night.  She like the water and water animals.  She was calm and very patient with her tribe and the rest of the warriors and was wise beyond her years.  Yang was impulsive – the greatest warrior because he was the most fierce.  He liked the heat of the sun and the feel of the land beneath his feet.  He loved to hunt animals but loved land animals of all kinds.  They completed each other. They could finish each other’s sentences, they would cook food for the other even if they hated it themselves and their personalities balanced each other out.

Hank appeared in front of the tribes to speak to them “Tribes, I need two of you to help with the sun and moon.  I choose Yin and Yang.  I choose them because their love and strength are enough to hold the sun and moon in place.”

“They didn’t like that, did they dad?” Biscuit wiped drool from his chin.

“They sure didn’t.  Because Hank told them that the two chosen could never see each other again for if they returned to each other’s arms, they would destroy all creation – only on the eclipse.  Their love was strong enough to hold the sun and moon, but too strong to be together after their bodies were changed to be like Hank.  Since they were opposites, they would keep the balance perfectly.

Now, this news devastated Yin and Yang.  They couldn’t bear to think that they couldn’t see each other anymore.  However, Hank told them that if they didn’t do this, creation would be in danger too.  And they knew they had to do what he said to save the world.

The couple parted and took their place in the sky, never to talk to each other again but always to look…” he kissed his now sleeping son on his head, “…and love from afar.” He laid next to him in the snow And placed the boys blanket over both of them, completely covering their bodies. “…and pray for an eclipse.  Thus is the story of yin and yang.”

Dan pulled his wallet from his pants pocket and removed a picture.  An image of a beautiful woman with auburn hair and hazel eyes.  The flash from the camera that took it reflected off of her black, thin-framed glasses.  She wore her normal, genuine smile.  He smiled back and kissed the picture; and closed his eyes.
